What is FACEBOOK and why should I care?

Facebook is a social networking website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc., with more than 500 million active users in July 2010, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world. ...

Definition source: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/facebook

It may surprise you that Facebook has only been around since 2004 because in a relatively short period of time it has become a world icon. It is as visible as the term as email and flat screen televisions in the media and tech speak. If you are not on Facebook you tend to be the exception not the rule. It has become a social media template for almost every form of communication we know. It has tapped into our phones, homes, schools, churches and most of the loca, national and international business community. It is international, used the world over to gather, share and distribute information. It uses almost every form of media from video, audio, pictures, feeds and the list goes on and on. Think back i f you are old enough to when answering machines and cell phones were just starting to appear in the market and how long it took them to catch on with the general public. However, this doesn't seem to be the same with Facebook it has caught on like a wild fire and shows no signs of slowing down. Yet as with any emerging technology it has its positive and negative attributes and the society as a whole is only beginning to deal with the overall implications of such a wide reaching form of social awareness and distribution of information. One could say it has taken on a life of its own like Hal the computer.

Why should we care even if we don't use it, and appreciate the benefits it provides for real-time communication and exchange of every form of information? Well as with before mentioned technologies like the answering machine and the cell phone I believe we can all attest to the fact that eventually we all brought into the existence and use of these products. I remember the first time I didn't hate the answering machine when all I got was ringing phone with no one at the other end and I couldn't even leave a message to say I had called "Don't they know we are in the 21 century"? As with the cell phone in the mid-nineties when a person decided to cut across my lane from the left side to make a right hand turn and left me know where to go but t-bone their Ford Mustang that they thought was so much faster than my at the time 2 plus ton SUV. After we confirmed everything was ok, except the vehicles he offered me his cell phone so I could call home and let them know I would be late. Needlessly to say I didn't use his, because I would have probably smashed it into the ground but from that day forward I have had a cell phone of my own just for such an occasion.

Facebook and social media in general is here to stay in some form or fashion and the sooner we appreciate that we will start taking action to further understand it and why it is essential that apply good judgment in the monitoring and use of it by the ones we love and care about. We live in a society where everything that glimmers is not gold and Facebook is no exception while it has some great applications for general, business and personal communication as other technologies it will be tested. We know of quite a few examples over the past few years where kids of been suspended from school and sports, people have loss their jobs and moral standards have been compromised in the inappropriate and sometime appropriate use of this media. While we continue to learn everyday about the good and bads of social media my primary recommendation is that those areas where it has already made inroads to your life that you at least spend a little time getting to know something about it. If your kids are using it I believe you have to take at least enough interest to monitor if they are using it and utilizing good judgment ....because small mistakes of yester-year of getting caught passing a note in class with something you shouldn't have, has been multiplied by about a 1000 with the ease of use of Facebook and social media in general and the consequences of bad decisions may not only be local, or national but maybe even have international implication for years to come.

Raising Funds for the Church

We are doing a fundraiser and it is the first we have ever coordinated in our new business venture. It is has been awesome to date getting to know the business and understanding the skills and attributes needed to run a fundraiser. It seems like a simple concept, helping people to raise money but like anything you want to do well it is anything but simple. What I mean is the amount of decisions required to kick-off a fundraiser is relatively simple, but getting it all to play together takes a level of patience and negotiating skills. There are any number of choices and approaches to coordinating a fundraiser, and while there probably is no wrong answer, the best answers will get you the best results. While you may have the right cause, best product, great sponsor and a goal that will provide a win win for everyone involved it still takes effort, commitment and a willingness to get a few no's along the way.

This fundraiser is for our church.

Schaumburg Community Church, located at

Our church motto is "Where God's Love Reigns and Dreams do come true"! We are raising money for the church building fund which gone by the name of the Noah's Ark Project, and we are asking everyone to Get on Board with making it happen! It has gone well and allowed me to began understanding and implementing what it takes to run a successful fundraiser. This is only the beginning and I truly believe as in any new business venture the mistakes you make along the way are only mistakes if you don't learn something from them and that it is essential that you always do your best and God will do the rest.

A Success Story - Getting Raccoons out of the Attic

Yes something about everything, what if you woke up at about 5am to the sound of thunder but it was no lighting and no rain. It was only a loud crashing and bumping sound that could have been on the roof but something told you this was clearly not the case. It sounded like moving thunder followed by screams and whining, as if a race was taking place across the entire house. It woke everyone in the house but after a minute or two it was apparent this was no thunder this was as I refer to it, critters on the roof or in the crawl space below our roof. We really don't have an attic where you might store things or even convert into useable space. We have a crawl space filled with installation, wires and vents for air and heating the home. Well this time it was much louder than anytime before and while we were pretty sure it was raccoons it was apparent they had taken invading our home to a whole new level.

I immediately turned to the internet for help on the subject of raccoons and other critters that might decide to move into your crawl space. I had to deal with raccoons before last year, when I used a wire cage trap provided by our local police station, I was pretty pleased with myself because I caught two raccoons using peanut butter sandwiches on the roof of our home. We have lots of raccoons in the neighborhood but most of the time the biggest issue in garbage cans being raided at night. When you live near a forest preserve as we do in the suburbs you tend to expect a few critters from time to time we have seen red foxes, possums, rabbits, squirrels and yes raccoons. Well bingo I found an article a professional critter remover had taken the time to develop for just this purpose. http://www.raccoonatticguide.com/

Amazing how some would take the time to do such a thing for people like myself that want a low cost solution to a pretty significant issue. It is one thing to hear them every once and a while and think they are just on the roof, it is another to hear them racing across the entire house, obviously fighting over who gets to live in our crawl space. The article was extremely detailed with a professionally done narrative on every question that might come to mind on the subject. He also included very graphic pictures of raccoons that had set up home in people crawl spaces across the country. Believe me the pictures got my attention and so did his comment that said once they move in, that they just don’t at some point decide “hey lived here long enough think I will move back out” he said that almost never happens!

So I knew without a doubt that action had to be taken and it had to be now! When you consider the noise, damage, possible babies being born in your crawl space and the fear it puts into your small children having an animal just about their head fighting, whining and racing about, it becomes very clear that doing nothing is not an option. As I said the article was well written and even provided local contact information across the United States for hiring professionals to remove them. I decided since the city was no longer providing the cages free of charge to catch them and it was already into the mating season ( Not the time to catch mom and leave the babies to die) that I had to come up with another solution other than catching them myself. I had already called several professional services last year prior to getting the cages from the city and found it to be a very expensive undertaking with most places charging for the equipment, setup and catching of the raccoons on a per raccoon basis. I had heard of a number of things to try but last year I really thought they were only on the roof, not inside of it. So the last thing I was going to do was attempt go up there and catch or run them out, there had to be another way to take care of the problem. I had already tried moth balls and the article said they really didn’t work anyway.

However, there was one solution that caught my eye, that I said hey this might work and if it doesn’t then I will move to the next idea because one way or another, the raccoons had to go! The idea he suggested that he said might work, was noise and lots of it. I said to myself I can do that and with minimum investment of time and effort. My home has a opening to the crawl space in the garage and a hanging shelf right under it for storage that ended up being just what I needed to execute my plan. Yes using my stereo receiver and two Bose speakers I was able to rig up a noise maker that made our home sound like we had surround sound. So here we are about four weeks later and I truly believe we have a solution that works. I made a point the day I set it up to play it for about 4 hrs at high volume and in a small crawl space you can be sure it was pretty loud up there. After that I left it setup so at the sound of any critter I would turn it on to say to them find another home or loss your hearing. In any case I thought I would share this because if hadn’t found the write up on the internet I would have been forced to incur a major expenses to have them removed, one we can ill afford. I still have the speaker up there for now, just to make sure because while we want to be humane we don’t want to share our crawl space in that way. The other nice benefit is that it does sound like we have surround sound when it is on....go figure!

Hacked E-mail Account

Yes it has happen to my wife and I, over the past three weeks. We both have received emails in our Yahoo email account that looked like they came from someone we knew, asking for help. We both had the same reaction to the possibility of its authenticity but at the same time consider the probability of the person contacting us in this manner for help? Apparently this has become a wide spread internet occurrence that in some cases people have acted on only to find out it was a scam to get them to wire money. In those situations where the person follows the instruction to respond to the request they later find out that the email never originated from the person that was suppose to have needed help. It is a scam that touches on the basis desire of our good nature to want to help a friend or acquaintance in need.  The root cause of the situation is a virus that has infected the email account of the person that is supposely sending the email for help. After the virus infects their computer it allows access to all their email accounts and the hacker to proceed from there.

Yahoo has confirmed this can happen. What apparently happens in this situation is the person supposely requeting help ,received an e-mail infected with what's called a "worm virus." When they opened the infected attachment to that e-mail, the hacker was able to send out "a mass e-mail" to the person's friends from there address, asking for money.

These are the times in which we live and since it would be very difficult, if not impossible to just stop using the computer to avoid this potential situations than the next best thing is to learn from others experience and knowledge. The suggested approach to avoiding this happening to you is, if you get an e-mail from a friend in need of money, call them first to verify their whereabouts, before sending money.

Happy New Year & God Bless!

As we celebrate the New Year we are also looking back on what has been an exciting year of new developments in our lives. It is not just the passing of a year, no it is so much more. We are blessed to have one of our kids finish college with two degrees, the start of two in high school and the youngest in fourth grade.  The joy of our children as well as the challenges all parent face of helping them develop into young adults. Experience tells me that one of the most important things we can do for our kids, is to help them develop a foundation of knowledge and beliefs that assist them in making good decisions. We see another year of mileage on all the things that make our lives work from our bodies, cars, spiritual growth, relationships, friends and family to mention a few. Each of these areas of our life will never be the same as it was before because as the clock keeps ticking so does the changes in life. It itself is not a good or bad thing, it is just a statement of the reality. I'm ever so thankful to be able to see a New Year (2011) and look back on the past year with a sense of accomplish in so many areas of our lives. We are blessed for so many reasons, being it our walk with God, health, family, new and old friends and the all the small miracles along the way as I call them. What do I mean by that, well I truly believe there are so many opportunities for us to be thankful to God that we just let past by as a bit of luck, our skills and abilities, chance, being in the right place at the right time, turning left instead of right, a snap decision or one we decided to sleep on or pray about before we moved forward. All opportunities to thank God, that I believe we so many times just take for granted. As we go into the New Year my wish for everyone is that you and yours will take a minute to realize how truly blessed you are and give the appropriate amount of thanks and praise to the God. Yes God (John 3:16),  who made the greatest sacrifice a father can make by sending his son to die so that we might live. It doesn't get any better than that, to have a love so great that you would die for it. It is with joy and anticipation that I look forward to the coming year because I believe this is the year of open doors and the seeds that we have planted in so many areas of our life will come to harvest and we will see the promise of God's goodness in our lives. It is by his grace that we are blessed to see and live and I just want to say Happy New Year to all and Thank You to God for everything!
